CHAPTER 13

The next morning, Suriah awoke with an overwhelming desire to do something she had not done in a long time. She wanted to take a road trip.

There were many days after a long work week she would hop in her car to experience the open road. On these excursions, she spent much time in museums taking in the culture, immersing herself in its rich knowledge that welcomed her like an old friend.

She lied in bed, mapping out a trail of the places she would like to see. She dreamed of driving down to Savannah to visit the various centers of African-American heritage such as the small town in Pinpoint. She typically took the I-95 exit to Jacksonville and spent time on the beach.

With concerns brewing over the threat of the coronavirus, everything was placed on lockdown, including travel. With that, she became even more swayed to embrace the opportunity. She made up in her mind it was a worthwhile plan. To put it into motion, she sprang out of bed to execute it.

Suriah booked a reservation at one of the finest hotels closest to the beautiful waters of Mobile...one that still offered at least minimal sightseeing opportunities. She pulled out one of her suitcases then began packing. She threw in her favorite beach attire, simple yet fashionable. She packed her most comfortable shoes to match everything. If she made it to her destination without being detoured, she would rather be stylishly stuck in a hotel overlooking the beautiful ocean. Safe from the destructive disease.

She hastened to the kitchen to pack a picnic basket of her preferred delicacies which would limit the necessity to go out to eat. In her spacious food pantry, she gathered all her favorites.

In the living room, she was met by Loralei.

"Lei-Lei!" screamed Suriah. "How the hell did you---"

Loralei dangled a key before her. "I took your key home that night we were here. I just realized I never returned it." She noticed Suriah's travel bags in her hand. "Where do you think you're going, Missy?"

"I wanted to take a road trip... to get away."

"You are aware everything is on lockdown, right? Businesses and even beaches. No one allowed in or out of your own district or state. People are being turned around left and right," said Loralei as she fixed herself a glass of wine.

"Why did you have to rain on my parade?" lamented Suriah, dropping the food on the dining room table then plopped in a chair.

"Look, don't kill the messenger! There have been too many deaths. The governors don't want tourists to bring more cases into their cities." Suriah felt outdone. Her need for a getaway had now been vanquished.

"Oh, cheer up, Suriah. The world hasn't ended yet."

Suriah, at first, thought that was a horrible thing to say but shook it off. "I'd better put these groceries away," she sulked, making her way to the kitchen. Returning, she took her suitcase to her bedroom.

"I'm just looking out for you," said Loralei in a mischievous overtone, "Unlike you did for me.
